Fossil Plant From The Miocene Disaster Peak Formation

Alpine County, California

An evergreen live oak branchlet, with leaves still attached, from the upper Miocene Disaster Peak Formation, High Sierra Nevada, Alpine County, California. Roughly 7 million years old. Called scientifically Quercus pollardiana--it is the Miocene equivalent of the modern Canyon live oak, endemic to many California mountain ranges. Preserved on a piece of andesitic sandstone.
